Intro to Oil Painting - Featuring Botanicals- 4/10-11
by Lana Köhn
Students will learn the basics of oil paints, accompanying supplies and how to paint a small plant study over the course of two 3 hour classes. They will walk away with at least one finished painting, small brush set and 1 canvas or wood panel. We will be using real plants as well as images as reference. Students are encouraged to bring their own (small) plants or photos to work from.
Class Breakdown Day 1:
First half of class - We will begin class with intros and a brief discussion of the materials and supplies we will be using. Students will begin by priming a small canvas or wood panel and sketch out a simple composition. These will be then set aside, as the class begins practicing some various painting exercises. We will cover setting up your palette, mixing colors and finally different approaches to applying paint. These exercises will be done on loose canvas from a canvas pad.
Second half of class - Once the students have gotten more comfortable with the medium we will return to their primed canvases and begin painting. I will be working on pieces as well for students to watch demos and techniques but will also be there to help during the process.
Class Breakdown Day 2:
We will begin Day 2 will discussing students thoughts, questions and any challenges they ran into. Day 2 will be heavily focused on troubleshooting and refining painting techniques. Students will finish their painting from Day 1 and if they have time begin prepping a second.
