Skidbladnir’s Figurehead (2009-10)
by Brindalyn Webster
For Skidbladnir’s Figurehead, Brindalyn Webster asked Gothenburg shop owners to pose as the figurehead of the legendary Scandinavian ship. In Norse myth, Skidbladnir is said to catch the wind whenever its sails are raised, fold to a size so small it can be carried in a pocket, and expand to hold all the gods of Asgard. At a time when rising waters threaten to submerge the city, these performances turn the boat into a symbol of escape and a metaphor for the ship of state.
