Kayla Mattes

Kayla Mattes is an artist based in Portland, Oregon. Influenced by a blend of pop-culture, the internet, color and consumerism, she uses her background in textiles to primarily create works in woven tapestry and installation. In April of 2014, Kayla came to Little Paper Planes for the LPP+ residency. Her project examined the overwhelming presence of pizza in contemporary culture through an installation and performance called Cheesy Rituals. Mattes received her BFA in Textiles at Rhode Island School of Design before moving to Portland in 2013. Her work has since been featured in publications such as Sight Unseen, Rhizome, and Juxtapoz and has been exhibited throughout the US and the UK. She also teaches textiles classes at Wildcraft Studio School in White Salmon, WA.
