Kayla Mattes

Kayla Mattes is a textile-based artist living and working in Portland, Oregon. Her work tends to comment on the influence of nostalgia and kitsch aesthetics on the development of popular culture. After studying Textiles at Rhode Island School of Design, Kayla launched her self-named jewelry line in the Fall of 2012 with the SS '13 Summer Camp Collection. The debut Collection reinterprets and pays homage to the lanyard braiding phenomenon by pairing the same lanyard knots used in summer camp with machine knitted cords. The necklaces are constructed entirely with textiles related techniques by hand in her studio. Along with her jewelry line she continues to work on various textile and surface design projects.
