Cary Loren

Cary Loren, a founding member of DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, apprenticed in the early 70s with New York underground film-maker and performance artist Jack Smith. Cary edited and printed the DAM magazine from 1976-79, which was reissued by Primary Information in 2011. Cary is also co-owner of Book Beat  in Oak Park, MI. Cary started making spray paintings as backgrounds for 14x17" magazine collages, and then began to make them on smaller standard paper and on top of Xerox collages. Two of the images included in the LPP exhibition are spray paintings on loose-leaf paper (one of which has some added crayon), while the third image is a spray painting over a ditto machine copy of a drawing. As Cary explains, "Only about 100 ditto machine prints were made before the stencil plate would go bad. There were 8-10 different ditto machine pages made for the magazine mostly in 1975 while I was learning how to use off-set presses and other copy machine techniques at a Ypsilanti, Michigan vocational training school. Some included lyrics to songs. Four of the ditto pages are included in the DAM facsimile book published by Primary Information. There are no titles to the paintings except that someone (?) where I lived signed a stack of them as a joke with different celebrity and movie star names. I just woke up one day and found them like that. I was pissed off and kept most of the signed ones out of the bound copies of the magazine. I found those when putting together the facsimile book for PI, so we decided to include them in the book as spacers between each issue."
