R.M. Phoenix
London based artist, R.M. Phoenix, uses painting, drawing, photography and, more recently, furniture-making, to explore the experience of unknowing and of being in uncertainties. The objects he makes explore the phenomenology of subtle differences in materials, the labour of their making, and the misperceptions and breakdowns within seemingly simple systems or repetitions. By attempting to undermine the connection between reality and the viewer’s perception, his work seeks to make looking a bodily, self-aware activity, pushing away the gaze as much as pulling it in, in an attempt to highlight awareness of the relationship between the viewer and the wider world.
